Welcome to Hellerup Yacht Club

Hellerup Sailing Club was founded by a group of sailing enthusiasts on 25 September 1915. After only two years in use, the Club’s pennant was replaced in 1917 by the existing one. Hellerup Sailing Club has a membership of between 8-900, which makes it one of the biggest sailing clubs in Denmark. Hellerup Sailing Club boasts a total of 12 Olympic medals, more than any other club in the world.

In 1948, Paul Elvstrøm won a gold medal in the Firefly class and Ole Berntsen won bronze in the Dragon. More recently – in 1988 – Jørgen Bojsen-Møller won gold in Flying Dutchman (FD), and in 1992, Jørgen and Jens Bojsen-Møller again won bronze in the same class. Junior Section: Hellerup Sailing Club has one of the country’s oldest-established junior sections, and therefore has a long tradition in training young sailors. In addition to winning many national championships, many of the Club’s juniors have brought home honours for Denmark from international events. Juniors at Hellerup Sailing Club are able to obtain international proficiency certificates in both theoretical and practical skills. The Club’s 7 ’Ynglinge’ class boats are used for this training which, in addition to instructional sailing, also includes weekend/Whitsun/summer and competition sailing both at home and abroad.  Optimist sailing: In 1995, the junior division expanded its activities by founding an ’Optimist Section’ with young sailors from the age of seven. Skilled instructors ensure that their young pupils actually have fun learning to sail . In addition to summer sailing, pupils also take lessons in theory, seamanship and swimming throughout the winter months. 10 optimist dinghies are used for training, three are reserved for races.

Senior Sailing School: In 1974, the Senior Boat Committee established a Senior Sailing School, which for more than 20 years has allowed a large number of sailors to achieve international proficiency certificates. Sail training is carried out in class 606 boats.

Senior Boat Committee: Once qualified from the Senior Sailing School, members may use the class 606 boats for recreational sailing trips in which the emphasis is placed on social interaction both during and after sailing as well as on many day, weekend and holiday trips. In addition, the Committee has access to the Club’s ‘Drabant’ and ‘X-79′, which are used for both racing and cruising.
