The great thing about having a computer is that you have so many tools available to you. Construction is going on all over campus, but one project has a special story. The bell tower has been in the works for two decades. Twenty years ago, initial discussions began about building a bell tower and the first donations were also given. The bell tower and alumni plaza are finally under construction and set to be complete later this year. Administrators hope to have the complex complete in time for homecoming on Nov. 7, but, depending on the weather, it may be as late as January 2010.

The Press-Register recently published an article detailing the progress of the bell tower and several readers saw fit to comment on the article on the newspaper’s Web site. Of the five comments posted, four were obviously negative. The project was heavily criticized and even called “a complete waste of money.” Although it cannot be determined whether the comments were posted by USA students, it was very clear that some people view the project negatively. In defense of the new bell tower, Director of Public Relations Keith Ayers explained that alumni have been pushing for the construction of the bell tower for a long time. Many donations have been made in support of the bell tower and alumni plaza. Two-thirds of the $3 million construction costs were financed by private donations. To date, the University has contributed approximately $1 million to the project. “The bell tower is an important project that gives the University a sense of history and tradition,” Ayers said. “It would not be right for us to use that money, which was donated for the construction of the bell tower, in other areas.” Ayers also pointed out there are a number of significant gifts still in the proposal stage. Alumni have undoubtedly been the strongest proponents and supporters of the new bell tower. Many have been working on the project for several years. For those alumni who no longer live in the Mobile area, there is a live webcam set up at the site of the new bell tower so that everyone can track the progress of its construction. Farallon Islands Webcam

Twenty-eight miles beyond San Francisco, a chain of rocky islands form a mostly undisturbed wildlife sanctuary that some biologists refer to as California’s Galapagos. And now bird-watchers and marine mammal enthusiasts have access to the area, thanks to a recently installed webcam.

The solar-powered camera is atop a lighthouse on Southeast Farallon Island, part of the Farallon National Wildlife Refuge that is home to approximately 350,000 seabirds of 13 species.

The 211-acre refuge consists of four island groups and is one of the oldest and most remote sanctuaries in the nation. It also is a renowned seasonal haunt for great white sharks. “Since the islands are not accessible to the general public, the webcam will be a valuable tool not only for scientists, but for casual observers as well,” Jack Dumbacher, curator of ornithology and mammalogy at the California Academy of Sciences and lead scientist on the project, said in a release. “The observations that we glean from this webcam will assist with ongoing research, guide conservation decisions and hopefully inspire citizens to care about this valuable resource right in San Francisco’s backyard.”

The result of a partnership between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, California Academy of Sciences and PRBO Conservation Science, the webcam offers 360-degree views of the island and surrounding waters. The webcam can be viewed via the Academy of Sciences website, which includes bird identification guides, research and conservation information and island history. “We’re proud to have this outstanding partnership and pleased to provide virtual access of these beautiful and amazing islands to the public,” said Gerry McChesney, acting refuge manager. “This way anyone can appreciate what it’s like to be on this very sensitive wildlife refuge.”

This is one of the best web cam shots I have ever seen. The view is from their drying shed down towards one of their u-pick fields.  This image has helped Purple Haze triple the amount of visitors to their site and we can see from the site stats that most visitors are locals.  With the farm open for u-pick lavender this is the right clientele to be using the camera.

River Haus in the Pines

This is the first client we helped get a web cam up and running.  Mike was very excited when his camera went live and it has been up and working now for close to three years.  This live web cam image is now posted on the local chamber of commerce and King 5 Televisions web site.  The webcam page of River Haus in the pines site gets more then 500 visitors day.

You may notice that most web cams have an impression on the image with the B&B’s contact information.  So even if the web cam images are linked on the chamber of commerce site or a television web site, it will always have the phone number and web site address of B&B or property where the webcam is located.

Solglimt on the Water 

This is our newest client with a live web cam.  Mary and Brian are thrilled with the results so far.  I was told that guests who call to make a reservation are looking right at the camera when they call and that the live image really sold them.

Having the web cam on their site has also created a dozen links to their site, which has helped their search engine ranks greatly.

As you can see adding a web cam to your site is one of the best things you can do for getting more business.  Here are a few tips when buying a camera.

1. Find one that can be branded with your contact information.  We recommend the NetCamMP from StarDot Technologies.

2. Once you have your image online try and get it linked on your local chamber of commerce site or Visitors Bureau and any other major local web site.  The more traffic to your own site the better.

3. Save great looking images you see while checking out your web cam through out the day.  Use these for posting to your blog or build a “Best of” page to show those unique times you have a great shot.

With the rampant growth of CCTV cameras evident to perk up the security measures by companies today, Sony Corporation unveils a new batch of network IP cameras for consideration. The new Sony Network IP PTZ cameras include the SNC-RZ50N, SNC-RZ30N, and SNC-RX550.

These cameras make use of a network video recorder or the Sony RealShot Manager software along with the ability to be operated in a wireless setup. The new cameras are also flexible and can be used day/night to make sure that security and visibility are made in the qualitative manner IP cameras are expected to deliver.

The state of Texas spent $2 million in federal grant money to install 14 Webcams along its border with Mexico. After its first year, the crowd-sourced surveillance program is out of money and has only yielded 11 arrests, according to published reports. Texas’ “BlueServo,” dubbed a “virtual stake-out,” was supposed to be revolutionary. Why hire border guards when the eyes of the Internet could be harnessed to prevent unauthorized border crossings?

Texas officials predicted that their planned 200 cameras would lead to the capture of at least 4,500 border-jumpers and roughly 1,200 drug-related arrests. Results, however, fell far short of the program’s goals, according to the Associated Press. The cameras have deterred about 300 attempting to cross illegally, the state said. Of the 11 arrests made, just three came within the program’s first six months.

While some 125,000 individuals registered to become “virtual Texas deputies,” many appeared to do so out of mere curiosity. And though numerous comments were left by the site’s users, they rarely pointed out illegal activity. “One report simply read ‘armadillo by the water,’ while another offered some advice,” noted The Dallas Morning News. “Just a word of warning: A moment ago I saw a spider crawl across the top of the camera,” reads another, according to the report. “You might want to try and prevent any webs from being spun across the lens area by treating with repellent or take other measures.”

State Senator Eliot Shapleigh (D-El Paso) told the AP: “Instead of making Texas safer, it has made Texas the source of international ridicule.” A spokesman for Perry said the expectations had simply been set too high. Perry, who is running for reelection in 2010, praised the Obama administration’s $700 million border protection plan and called on the federal government to deploy 1,000 soldiers to Texas for border patrol duty. Perry has also asked the Texas legislature for $135 million to fund state-run immigration controls. Sen. Eliot Shapleigh (D-El Paso) criticized Perry’s request for soldiers, saying Democrats and Republicans do not support “militarization of the border.” “I support 1,000 new effectively trained Border Patrol or customs agents, but not the use of the military,” he said.
