Now people can visit their favorite beach without even leaving their homes. A new Web camera catches the umbrellas, status of the tide and even the sandcastles in progress at Skaket Beach on Cape Cod Bay.

The camera went public Monday after a weekend of testing, according to town technology coordinator Peter Van Dyck. It’s at the same Web address as the popular web camera across town at Nauset Beach. That webcam launched in April and got thousands of hits right away, Van Dyck said.

The Orleans beach cameras don’t show enough detail to let parents catch school kids taking an unauthorized beach day. But the webcams have many uses such as shellfishermen monitoring them to see whether the wind is blowing a tide in or out.

The Nauset Beach camera is at the top of a 45-foot pole in a hydrogen-sealed container that keeps out moisture. The Skaket Beach camera is in a glass dormer in the administration building.

Dave Johnson of Telecam Systems, which puts up panoramic Web cameras for Cape sites and elsewhere, doesn’t know of any other town-owned beach cameras. An online search of several town websites didn’t show any others.

Step 1 :  Get a web camera.
