These days there are literally hundred of webcam’s available from many manufacturers and choosing a web cam can be time consuming and confusing for shoppers. The most common use of web cams is in the Instant Messaging market and applications such as Webcam Chatroulette, Windows Messenger, Yahoo Instant Messenger and Skype allow people from all over the world to communicate easily and cheaply. This aim of this article is to highlight a few features you should look out for when purchasing a webcam for instant messaging.

Quality of a webcam is determined by the type of sensor and many webcam’s now use CCD technology as found in many Digital Cameras. Low end and Early web cams use CMOS sensors which offer lower Quality so it is important to choose a webcam that offers a good enough resolution to deliver clear crisp images and smooth video. For instant messaging, the resolution the image sensor does not need to produce high resolution images as the video is usually displayed as a small video window within the instant messaging software. Therefore a webcam that offers 1.3 mega pixel resolution should be more than adequate for delivering quality video and also decent snapshots if required.

Simplicity. Almost all of the webcams available today require a USB connection to the computer so it is important to check your PC or Laptop has this connector available. You will also want to find a Webcam from a reputable manufacturer some of which include Logitech, Microsoft, Labtec, Saitek, Hauppauge and Axis as they will offer simple and well tested software installations which should work with little or no configuration of your Instant Messaging software. Also check that your webcam has a usable stand or connector to enable you to attach the device at a suitable position – monitor mounted webcams are often the best choice as they offer the best position and distance to capture a persons face for instant messaging. Many webcams display the logos of the relevant instant messaging manufacturer on the packaging so its worth checking if your client is supported.

Price. The price of webcams do vary considerably and you can pay anywhere from ten to hundreds of dollars for a webcam. For instant messaging a mid range webcam should not only provide the best quality but also offer a good level of support and compatibility. Some webcams offer face tracking and zooming technology and if you want these features you will have to pay slightly more but this does make day to day use of the webcam a little easier as it will not require as much repositioning. Also check that the webcam has at least a 2 year warranty.

For a webcam that will offer all of the above a 1.3 mega+pixel webcam from Logitech or Microsoft will be the top recommendation and will support Skype and all of the other common Instant Messaging clients. In the current market the Logitech Sphere, or Microsoft Life Cam will be more than suitable. You will expect to pay around $50 for a webcam of this specification from one of the main manufacturers. Test your Webcam.

About six months ago I got this crazy idea. What if I put a webcam up on our hill? There was no power up there, so I thought of the options. I settled on the idea of building a solar powered webcam. Having never done this before, I set out to learn about solar panels, batteries, and webcams. I’ve tried to capture the important parts here so you can learn from what I’ve done and build your own solar powered webcam.

First, select the camera. There are hundreds of webcams to choose from. I was looking for an inexpensive camera that could be mounted outdoors and that was wireless. I was not running any wires up to the hill. I decided to skip the PTZ cameras (the ones with pan, tilt, and zoom) since I knew I’d be running on battery power. I choose an indoor camera with a matching outdoor housing rather than the outdoor cameras. The main factor was cost. My TRENDnet Wireless Internet Camera Server (TV-IP110W) was $79.99 on Webcam Sale. Outdoor cameras are much more expensive. Trendnet also makes an Outdoor Camera Enclosure with a mount designed for the camera. The other thing to worry about with a solar powered setup is how much power the camera draws. This one says it draws 6 watts max.

The next thing to consider was how much solar power I would need to power the camera. I assumed six watts max meant 2.5-3 watts nominal, or 60-72 watts each day. At 12 volts, that’s six amp hours each day. Since solar panel installations run off of batteries, they end up being just as important as the panel. You need a battery that will hold enough power to run the camera all day. The panel needs to provide enough power to charge the batteries each day with the limited amount of sunlight available. According to Solar Oregon, Portland gets about 4 hours of peak sun on average each day. To test my assumptions about the power bring drawn from the camera, I bought a Kill a Watt meter Kill a Watt meter and plugged the camera into it for a week. The power consumption was so small that it never registered on the meter. Armed with this info I decided on the Sunforce 50032 15 Watt Solar Battery Charger Panel. The panel shoudl generate about 60 watts of power each day to the battery.

Panel Solar

I ended up buying a 33 Amp Hour battery from Batteries Plus locally. While I could have used a smaller battery, I wanted the extra power available for those winter days when there isn’t much sun.

To connect the panel to the battery, you use a device called a charge controller. One side connects to the panel. The other side connects to the battery. Basically, it keeps the panel from overcharging the battery. I chose the Sunforce 7 Amp Charge Controller.

Once I had chosen the camera, panel, and battery, the next step was putting it all together. I started by mounting the panel on a pole at the top of the hill in my backyard. I fretted quite a bit over how to mount it to the pole. In the end I used three 12 inch 2×4s, a metal L bracket, and a 4×4 post. The top and bottom 2×4s are bolted onto the panel through the mounting holes provided. The middle 2×4 is attached to the metal L bracket and resting on the panel mounts.

Solar panels work best when mounted facing South at roughly 45 degrees. To accomplish this, I bolted the L-bracket to the side of a 4×4. The 4×4 was concreted into the ground for stability.

Controller Bbattery

Once the panel was in place, I connected the charge controlled and batter. To keep the charge controller dry, I mounted a small (6×6×4) plastic sealed box to the 4×4. Wires go in and out of the box through a small hole drilled in the bottom. I chose the size of the box so it was large enough to fit the chrage controller, an inverter, and the power adapter for the camera. I could have also just built or bought something to convert the batteries 12 volts to the fix volts used by the camera. In this case, the Charge Controller is connected to the battery. This is how the battery is charged. The inverter is also connected to the battery. The inverter has a cigarette lighter style input on it, so I bought a cigarette lighter style jack at a local auto parts store. I used heavy duty velcro to hold the charge controller and cigarette lighter adapter to the back of the case.

At this point, there is power to the inverter. I first plugged in an LED nightlight to test it. Instead of a webcam, I could power lights. a radio, or other small electronic devices. A solar setup like this can be used in many situations.

Battery Box

Once I had power it was time to mount the camera. When I say the camera, I actually mean the camera, the camera housing, the arrestor, and the external antenna. That’s a lot of stuff! The first thing I bought was the camera. I tested it out to get it working as I wanted, then ordered the housing. Once it got here, I realized I needed an external wifi antenna. I choose the smallest outdoor antenna TRENDnet 8 dBi Outdoor Omni Directional Antennafrom this manufacturer. It is still almost 2 feet tall! The reason for an antenna is twofold. First, the camera is in a metal box. Its wifi reception is going to be hampered by this fact. Second, the camera is a ways away from the wifi router, which is inside and at the other end of the house. I tested the signal first by walking around on the hill with my ipod touch. It worked fine and so does the camera.

Outdoor Camera

The arrestor has two functions. The first is to convert the cable from an SMA to N-type connector. This connects the antenna to the camera. The second and most important function is to protect the camera from a lightening strike. Finally, I had to plug the camera into the inverter in the box mounted to the 4×4. I had to cut the power adapter at both ends. The DC plug doesn’t physically fit through the holes in the camera enclosure, so the manufacturer recommends cutting the wire. I had to do the same at the other end. This was both to lengthen the wire and to fit the wire through the hole in the bottom of the plastic box mounted to the pole.

Outdoor Camera Result

The next result is a solar powered webcam that broadcasts live video 24×7. The total cost for the project was $564.60. This is less than many of the outdoor cameras I looked at. It is also less than what it would cost to hire an electrician to run 110V to my hill. I thoroughly enjoyed building this and am now thinking of all kinds of things I could power with my solar panel.

I don’t have a dog right now, but if I did, I totally wouldn’t trust it to roam around my apartment while I’m not there. Who knows what kind of mischief it’ll get into or what it’ll find lurking in my sock drawer. This Pet’s Eye View Camera makes it easy to keep track of your dog, but $55 is too expensive for what appears to be a glorified Webcam.

There’s not a lot going on here in terms of technology: the little USB still camera attaches to your pet’s collar and can automatically take pictures at 1-, 5-, or 15-minute intervals. The camera can hold a total of 40 shots in 640×480 resolution. It seems like the camera would be more efficient if it could automatically upload pictures via Wi-Fi to an online account like Flickr or Snapfish so you can monitor your animals on the fly, but as it stands you can only check out the pictures after the damage has been done.

The next time you find yourself combing through the refrigerator trying to find that missing steak, consult the camera–all signs point to Beethoven.

Features:
A mini digital camera that can be attached to your pet’s collar.
Take up to 40 pictures of your pet’s secret life.
Use only with flat nylon webbing or flat leather belt collars of at least 9.5mm wide (not included).
TO AVOID CHOKING HAZARD DO NOT USE WITH CHAIN OR ROLLED COLLARS.
Auto Interval setting allows you to set the camera to take shots at 1, 5 or 15 minute intervals. To conserve battery the camera will go into sleep mode between shots.
The camera takes 4″ by 6″ shots in 640 x 480 resolution.
The camera recharges via USB.
Requires Microsoft 2000 or higher/Mac OSX and above.
Includes Lithium Ion rechargeable battery.
Suitable for pets, though may be best if it is put on said pet by a human, aged 8 years+.
Size: 10 x 5 x 4cm.

Everyone loves to see a great photo. On the web, some of the best photos to check out are from live web cams. Web cams are especially useful because they reflect real-time. If the beach where you want to surfing has a live web cam, you can check out the waves before loading up your gear. Imagine seeing the day the surf come in and out throughout the day, and people enjoying the sunshine

Now image you have a wonderful view from your lodging property and you want to show it off to potential guests. A webcam is a must! Past and future guests will flock to your site to check the weather or just to see what is new from the view.

In the past couple of years we have helped six clients get web cams installed and running and the results have been fantastic. Below are three examples of how adding a web cam to your site can generate lots of repeat traffic for your site.

Purple Haze Lavender

This is one of the best web cam shots I have ever seen. The view is from their drying shed down towards one of their u-pick fields. This image has helped Purple Haze triple the amount of visitors to their site and we can see from the site stats that most visitors are locals. With the farm open for u-pick lavender this is the right clientele to be using the camera.

River Haus in the Pines

This is the first client we helped get a web cam up and running. Mike was very excited when his camera went live and it has been up and working now for close to three years. This live web cam image is now posted on the local chamber of commerce and King 5 Televisions web site. The webcam page of River Haus in the pines site gets more then 500 visitors day.

You may notice that most web cams have an impression on the image with the B&B’s contact information. So even if the web cam images are linked on the chamber of commerce site or a television web site, it will always have the phone number and web site address of B&B or property where the webcam is located.

Solglimt on the Water

This is our newest client with a live web cam. Mary and Brian are thrilled with the results so far. I was told that guests who call to make a reservation are looking right at the camera when they call and that the live image really sold them.

Having the web cam on their site has also created a dozen links to their site, which has helped their search engine ranks greatly.

As you can see adding a web cam to your site is one of the best things you can do for getting more business. Here are a few tips when buying a camera.

1. Find one that can be branded with your contact information. We recommend the NetCamMP from StarDot Technologies.

2. Once you have your image online try and get it linked on your local chamber of commerce site or Visitors Bureau and any other major local web site. The more traffic to your own site the better.

3. Save great looking images you see while checking out your web cam through out the day. Use these for posting to your blog or build a “Best of” page to show those unique times you have a great shot.

4. Lastly, Google is now linking to WebCams from maps.google.com. This is big. To get your listed takes about 30 days and you can start by going here: http://www.123cam.com/webcam-map.php

If you get a web cam all set up send us a link so we can check it out!
