A popular pub has become the first in the country to allow punters to watch their dinner being cooked on live webcams. During lunch and dinner times at the Overstone Arms, situated in the village of Pytchley, Northants, punters can watch head chef Russell Clamp on the UK’s first ‘Chefcam’ as he prepares and dishes up food.

Mr Clamp, 51, who has been at the pub since May, says he can also talk webcam watchers on Skype through his recipes or simply let them soak up the kitchen atmosphere. The experienced chef, who has cooked for Prince Charles on a private yacht in the past, came up with the innovative idea after fellow chefs and curious customers often asked about their meals and how they were served up.

He said: “I’m quite a chatty person and not afraid to let people know exactly how I do my job.“Because of the style of food we do, which we refer to as art on a plate, I have a team who each have their own artistic style which they put on the plate.

“I think it is a good idea, chefs need to be more open. There’s a lot of TV programmes about chefs so we need to get used to the idea of people watching us. I see no idea why it won’t take off and be adopted by plenty more restaurants and pubs.”

The experienced chef, who has cooked in Paris, Dubai and Holland during a successful culinary career, has already had two schools contacting him asking if he can put on live demonstrations for high school pupils something which he was delighted to do.

And someone else who is happy to have the kitchen doors wide open is Sue Withers, who took over the pub a year ago and is backing Mr Clamp’s initiative.“I haven’t heard of anywhere else doing this,” she said.

“I think it is good fun for both our chef to show off his work and the viewer to find out what exactly goes into their meals.“It may seem scary to some chefs, but Russell is very open about his work.”The webcam is connected to a Skype account called theoverstonekitchen which can be called by a Skype user for free.

29 – 31 July 2011 The Hungaroring is located near the town of Mogyorod in Hungary. It has a length of 4,381 km with 16 turns and hosts the annual Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix.

The Hungaroring is primarily known for the lack of overtaking opportunities. This was shown during the 1990 Hungarian Grand Prix when Thierry Boutsen was leading the entire race with a trail of cars behind him, including the one of Ayrton Senna. A good qualification is important on this circuit.

Drivers’ opinions about this circuit are various. While drivers such as Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso have said to appreciate the circuit, others find it slow and demanding. The circuit is loved among spectators, but not that much among drivers. It is one of the safest circuits on the Formula 1 calendar. One of the turns is named after Nigel Mansell.

The Hungarian Grand Prix on the Hungaroring is still the only Formula 1 Grand Prix in Eastern Europe : Live Webcams from Hungary

Roland Garros was born in France in 1882. An experienced pilot, Garros was the first Frenchman to cross the Mediterranean by air. On the outbreak of the First World War, Garros was sent to serve on the Western Front.

Garros realised that he would have more success in dogfights if he could find a way of firing a machine-gun through the propeller. Working with Raymond Saulnier, a French aircraft manufacturer, Garros, added deflector plates to the blades of the propeller of his Morane-Saulnier. These small wedges of toughened steel diverted the passage of those bullets which struck the blades.

Now able to use a forward-firing machine-gun, went out searching for his first victim. On 1st April 1915, Garros approached an German Albatros B II reconnaissance aircraft. The German pilot was surprised when Garros approached him head-on. The accepted air fighting strategy at the time was to take ‘pot-shots’ with a revolver or rifle. Instead Garros shot down the Albatros through his whirling propeller.

In the next two weeks Garros shot down four more enemy aircraft. However, the success was short-lived because on 18th April, a rifleman defending Courtrai railway station, managed to fracture the petrol pipe of the aircraft that Garros was flying. Garros was forced to land behind the German front-line and before he could set-fire to his machine it was captured by the Germans. After finding out about Garros’ invention, German pilots began using these deflector plates on the blades of their propellers.

In 1918 Garros escaped from Germany and returned to active service on the Western Front. Roland Garros was shot down and killed at Vouziers on 5th October 1918: French Open 2011 Live Stream, Roland Garros Web Cam Feed

Last year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences waded into the Internet stream and put up a webcam to cover the Oscar nominations announcement. This year, the Acad is putting on a show a pre and post show for Tuesday’s ayem noms unveiling hosted by Chris Harrison and Entertainment Weekly’s Dave Karger. Without any fanfare, last year’s streaming offering drew about 200,000 users, which spurred the Acad to step up its game.

“We made the stream live about 20 minutes before the announcements were made so all you saw was an empty stage” last year, said Ric Robertson, exec administrator for AMPAS. “We soon began to notice that even with nothing there people were beginning a dialogue in the chat box below, which got us to thinking of what we could do for next year’s show.”

Harrison, host of ABC’s “The Bachelor” and TV Guide Network’s Oscar red carpet coverage, and Karger will log on at 5:30 a.m. PT to riff on 2010 movies and what trends may be reflected in the noms. After AMPAS boss Tom Sherak and Mo’Nique, last year’s supporting actress winner, announce the contenders in 10 categories (at 5:38:30 sharp!), Harrison and Karger will be back with a post-game analysis and what the Acad is promising will be “a revealing a new piece of information about the Oscar telecast.”

The Acad’s streaming coverage will be available via Oscars and the Acad’s Facebook page, among other outlets. In addition to Tuesday’s noms announcement, the Acad plans to again offer Web streaming coverage of the ultra-starry Oscar nominees luncheon Feb. 7. And Harrison and Karger will be back on duty for Oscar with the 10-episode “Road to the Oscars” Web series parsing this season’s best pic nominees. Clearly, the Acad has embraced Web streaming as a way of letting more movie buffs behind the velvet rope for the pinnacle of awards season. “We’re always looking for appropriate ways to give that kind of backstage experience people wouldn’t normally get,” Robertson said.

A small, but interesting, update to Skype‘s iPhone app got pushed out today. Version 3.0.1 builds on the video calling capability that was added back in December by adding support for a wider range of Skype clients and devices, including Skype for TV.

If the idea of making a video call from some far-flung corner of the world back to a family TV sounds appealing to you, you’ll need a TV that specifically supports Skype. A number of Panasonic and Samsung sets will do the job, while a compatible webcam is required too. A list of supported kit is here.

While video calling to your TV may remain elusive for many for now, Skype purchasing mobile video streaming service Qik and offering paid-for group video chat both indicate that the company sees video as an important part of its future.

With user numbers reported to have rocketed of late, and Internet connected TV devices starting to break into the mainstream, it’s likely that it won’t be long before the idea of calling home and chatting to the family through a 40″ flat screen in the corner of the room is commonplace.
