Officials at the National Zoo announced that three lion cubs were born Wednesday morning, just three weeks after another female lion at the zoo gave birth to a litter of four cubs.

The cubs were born to 6-year-old Nababiep, the older sister of Shera, who gave birth to four cubs last month. Because it is not unusual for the intervals between births to be several hours long, keepers are continuing to monitor Nababiep in case additional cubs are on their way.

Zoo officials said Nababiep appeared to go into labor at 1:20 a.m. Wednesday morning. The first cub was born about 8:04 a.m., the second at around 9:15 a.m. and the third about 10:30 a.m. Since then, all three cubs have been active and at least two appear to have nursed so far.

The father of both sets of cubs is Luke, the zoo’s 4-year-old male lion. Zoo officials said Luke is also the “most genetically valuable lion” in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan for African lions (Panthera leo).

“I am thrilled that everyone can watch the cubs in the very early days of their lives via our webcam,” said Dennis Kelly, director of the Smithsonian’s National Zoological Park. “I know visitors to the National Zoo will be excited to follow the cubs as they interact with the adults, play with one another and grow up.”

Nababiep gave birth earlier this year to a single male cub, but it died just two days later after a straw seed became lodged in its lung, which led to pneumonia.

The zoo’s lion cub webcam, which featured Shera and her four cubs, is not broadcasting images of the family because Shera and her cubs have been moved to a different den.

On Aug. 31, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo welcomed a litter of African lion (Panthera leo) cubs. Shera and her cubs can now be viewed on the Zoo’s live webcam.

Five-year-old Shera gave birth to four cubs, her first litter and the first surviving litter for the cubs’ father, 4-year-old Luke. The cubs were born between 10:30 p.m. Monday and 2:30 a.m. Tuesday and are thriving and doing well.

As a first-time mother, Shera is very attentive and has been seen nursing and grooming her cubs. Lion keepers will also post cub updates on the website. The cubs will not be out in the yard until late fall, which will give the Zoo’s animal keepers and veterinary team time to examine them and monitor Shera as she adjusts to being a first-time mother.

The webcams and the installation were generously provided by CGH Technologies Inc. allowing viewers around the world to watch the lions and other wildlife at the National Zoo.
With a few clicks, Evanston residents can watch baby falcons grow from eggs to birds of prey on the Evanston Public Library’s website. The webcam, which operates from March to June, watches a nest of two falcons, which are two of 24 of their species in the state. The camera records every moment, from the falcons sitting on their eggs to the chicks finally leaving the nest to start their own families. The same pair of falcons have been nesting on a pillar outside the third floor of the building for three years.

When former library director Neal Ney first noticed falcons nesting at the library about six years ago, they had made their home in a flower box beside the third floor window. Ney covered the window with graph paper to keep visitors from disturbing the birds. An information technology employee recommended setting up a camera so people could watch as the chicks hatched and developed.

After the first year, it was not clear whether the project would continue because the first female broke her wing and only one chick survived, but a new female arrived the following year and the pair has been nesting at the library ever since. “A new cliff may become more attractive at some point, but I think the likelihood of the birds coming back is pretty high,” Ney said. The library is hoping to upgrade the camera next year to record continuously, said virtual services librarian David Jordan. The current camera takes only still images every five minutes.

Since the falcons first started nesting at the library, officials have been in contact with Mary Hennen, collections assistant for the Birds Division at the Field Museum and director of the Chicago Peregrine Program. When the chicks are three to four weeks old, Hennen comes to the library, takes blood samples and fits bands on the birds so she can monitor their dispersal. watch baby falcons from the Evanston Public Library’s website, more webcam about Falcon in the world.

The EPL never publicizes the banding as an event, but a small crowd usually gathers and watches it, said Donald Westphal, who works in the maintenance department at the EPL. Videos from last year’s banding are available online. Hennen has been monitoring peregrine falcons in Illinois for 20 years. In 1951, the species was completely wiped out in the state because of poisoning from a pesticide used on crops and in forests that made the birds’ egg shells so thin females would break their own eggs while trying to incubate them. In 1972, the federal government banned the pesticide and the species began recovering about 20 years later, Hennen said. Now, the state touts 24 of the falcons. That may not seem like a large number, but Hennen said the falcons are no longer considered endangered in the state.

In this fast paced world of blue tooths and blackberries, we can get just about anything we want, at anytime. You can buy shoes, get directions, find phone numbers, update your Face book page, grab sport scores or witness live birth. Witness live birth?

“It’s been months of very impatiently waiting,” Terri Petter with Wolves-Woods and Wildlife said. Petter has set up a webcam in a spot where one of her wolves, Kootenai, will give birth near Farmington.

“She’s getting big. She’s starting to pull her hair out of her stomach to make her bed and we have a box all set up. It’s her den. It’s all clean and ready to go and the camera’s set up,” Petter explained.

Kootenai won’t enter the den until she’s ready to give birth. On Easter Sunday, the den looked more like an Easter basket. “We were hoping for Easter babies but we’re a couple of days late,” the wolf keeper said. Kootenai will rush into the web cam shot when she’s ready to deliver. “She will go in there and she will start labor and you can tell because she’ll start spinning circles.”

The wolf is expected to give birth to 4 to 6 pups in 3 or 4 days. The website constantly updates the feed on the wolf webcam every 20 seconds. “My phone’s dead probably after 3 hours because I’m on that cam all the time, just making sure, just checking it out,” Petter joked.

Wolves-Woods and Wildlife will keep the webcam up for 3 weeks after Kootenai gives birth before moving the family to the organization’s headquarters just east of Farmington. The group puts on education programs at fairs and shows throughout the year.

The wildlife webcam has been wildly popular in Minnesota in the past few years. Thousands from around the world tuned in to the Loon Cam in 2009 and 20,000 computer-users watched Lily the bear in Ely give birth this January.

Pier 39 in San Francisco is normally smelled and heard from afar, even before tourists and local lay eyes on it. But as of Monday, the ever-present herd of sea lions that normally populates the collection of docks is missing.

The obvious absence has caught the attention of the team at the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, as well as their hosts at Pier 39. “We have no idea where they moved on to or why,” Shelbi Stoudt, who helps take care of stranded sea life at the Marine Mammal Center said. “It’s exactly opposite of what we’ve seen over the last 10 years,” said Sheila Chandor, Pier 39′s harbor master. “I think it’s food. Usually this time of year, we have a lot of herring coming through.”

In September, the population peaked at a record high of 1,500 – the most sea lions ever hosted by the pier since they moved in after the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989. Chandor said that some sea lions tagged by the Marine Mammal Center had been located south of Monterey but cautions that the link to the sea lions’ food supply is just “guesswork.”

A quick check on the Webcam mounted at the Pier 39 Restaurant proves the sea lions are definitely gone from Pier 39′s K Dock. A dozen or so remain on J Dock, according to Chandor. The population of human sea-lion watchers remained steady. Stoudt and her team aren’t sending out a search crew. The sea lions are, after all, migratory…

Roving fisherman Daniel K. might take credit for the scarcity. His dog, Rez, a lab/pit bull mix, has a thing for sea lions and has been known to run after them, barking along the way and chasing them into the water at the Hyde Street Pier. That’s not likely the case at Pier 39, where fishermen and their dogs don’t have access to the sea lions’ special docks. Whether it’s the weather or just Mother Nature’s natural migration sending the sea lions packing, one thing’s for certain, Pier 39 just isn’t the same without them.
