Stork Webcam Season in Full Flight
Because they like to nest up in and around towns and villages, Hungary’s storks can quickly become local celebrities. Now one bird has gone one long-legged step further by rearing its chicks on the roof of the high school in Darány (Somogy county), an event that the kids can watch on monitors in the school and the rest of us can follow online. Although the nest has been a fixture in the school for some 30 years, the stork family first made RTL Klub’s TV news because it has delayed the renovation of the roof by some four months. But thanks to the Internet, this is only the first chapter in Hungary’s first stork reality show.
The webcam (click the picture of the stork on the home page to capture an up-to-the-minute image) went live on Sunday and currently shows the stork chicks to be fit and well. However, according to RTL Klub’s website, the real drama will only come when the Big Mother eliminates the weakest of the five chicks from the nest in true valóságműsor style. At present, no technology is available to allow voting via SMS, but the team at RTL Klub are surely working on it.
