RipCode allows iPad to play Flash Webcam
The iPad doesn’t have many real shortcomings. Pundits can complain about the lack of USB ports and a webcam, but neither of those things seem to be very upsetting to Apple’s target demographic. Not that many people have a burning need to video-chat, and the iPad’s seamless design is a fair trade for a bit of USB hassle. One area where the iPad unquestionably falls flat is Flash support.
But not for long. SlashGear reports that a company called RipCode has just announced a new clientless Flash codec that allows Flash video to play on the iPad. It can handle resolutions from QVGA to 1080p. QuickTime, MP4 progressive, and MPEG-TS are also supported. As is Microsoft Smooth Streaming and RTSP.
RipCode ‘s TransAct Transcoder V6 transcodes content in the cloud, before said content even reaches the iPad. And it’s not an app, so Apple can’t ban it for making nice with Adobe! They might find some way to disable it, though. That all depends on just how hateful Steve Jobs feels today.
