Live Webcam Keeps Tabs On Harrisburg Falcons

The birds, which nest atop the Rachel Carson State Office Building in downtown Harrisburg, are tending five eggs. Two cameras keep tabs on the falcons daily. You can watch a livestream of them here. Federal officials listed peregrine falcons as an endangered species in 1972. According to the state’s Department of Environmental Protection, some of the earliest reintroduction sites were in Pennsylvania.
“The Peregrine has subsequently experienced one of the most dramatic recoveries of any endangered species, and was formally removed from the federal list in 1999. The Peregrine Falcon continues to be listed by the Pennsylvania Game Commission as an endangered species because of the small local population and continued threats,” the DEP states on its falcon cam Web site.
The falcons prefer to nest in high places, and often turn highrises and bridges into temporary homes. The scientific name for peregrine falcons is Falco peregrinus, which means “wandering falcon.” You can find out much more about the nesting falcons, as well as other endangered birds on the state’s Web site.
