A harsh cold wave that has killed more than 300 people in Europe over the past two weeks still has a long way to go before it runs its course.

People heading for the Kootenay Lake ferry terminal at Kootenay Bay can get a look at just how long the wait will be thanks to a new webcam, reports Megan Cole for the Nelson Star.

The East Shore Internet Society set up the webcam as a service to the community, says Bob Carter, operations manager for the society.

“It’s been very popular. People think it’s the best thing we’ve ever done. It is really handy and I’ve used it many times myself, especially when the little ferry was running, I would sit there and wonder do I go for the ferry and think ‘not yet, not yet. Ok now!’” he said. A massive run-off from the North is bearing down on Bangkok faster than expected and should reach Rangsit Canal tonight, Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said.

Yet confidence in the ability of the authorities to stem the watery onslaught sank lower today after the Prime Minister, Yingluck Shinawatra, admitted that parts of Bangkok were likely to be flooded.

“We cannot block the water forever,” she told a media conference. ”The longer we block the water the higher it gets. We need areas that water can be drained through so the water can flow out to the sea.”
