In 1991, a camera was installed to capture pictures of the coffee pot in the Trojan Room of the old computer lab at the University of Cambridge!

The idea behind it was to allow people to see if there was still coffee without having to go from their respective departments/rooms to the pot!

The image was 128×128 feed of the famed coffee pot on the user’s desktop in grayscale. Years later, the ‘Trojan Room coffee pot’ was auctioned off on eBay for $5268.55!

The live New Year’s Eve webcam feed overlooking the skyline of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavík was a great success, pulling in over 200,000 viewers worldwide.

The webcam, set up by Icelandic telecommunications company Míla, each year, thousands of tourists visit Iceland to see in the New Year and witness the spectacular firework display. Visitors describe the event as something everybody should experience at least once.   Thanks to Míla, viewers were able to experience the exploding rockets and dancing lights as it happened from the comfort of their own homes.

A Pacific storm blanketed Seattle in more than 4 inches of snow on January 18, forcing school closures and airline flight cancellations and snarling traffic in a city more accustomed to rain.

The Internet, at least the part within Russia, may slow down significantly on the day of March 4 presidential election if video cameras streaming live feeds from the field are installed at each polling station, Ilya Massukh, deputy head of the communications ministry told Russian business daily Vedomosti.

The questionable idea to install cameras in polling places was first brought up by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin during the annual televised phone-in with Russians. Mr. Putin suggested that this be done in response to the allegations that the December 4 elections to the parliament were rigged.

“The main communication links on the average transmit 70 gigabits per second in Russia, and this project, if you treat it head on will clog up almost 100 gigabits per second,” Vedomosti cited Mr. Massukh as saying

The last stage of maintenance work will be carried out between February 15 and March 1,  and the cameras will be ready to go on March 1 according to the communications ministry website. Meanwhile, critics say a camera at each polling place may not do much to prevent fraud.

Funerals at a Staffordshire crematorium will soon be streamed on the internet. Stafford Borough Council, which runs the crematorium on Tixall Road, said webcams were being installed in the chapel, along with a new music system.

It said mourners who were too ill or too far away to attend in person would be able to watch services by entering a Pin code. Anthony Evans from the council said internet security would prevent people from intruding on other services.

He said an 80,000-track music database would allow families to choose songs to play at funerals, without having to search for them at such a difficult time. Mr Evans said the technology would allow families to have a “more meaningful funeral”.
