Webcam firm Trendnet is struggling to fix an error that allowed anyone on the internet to view live footage without a password.

Internet addresses linking to the video streams have been posted to message board web sites, making users concerned that they could view children’s bedrooms among other locations.

Trendnet said it has emailed affected customers and is in the process of releasing updates to correct a coding error introduced in 2010. The firm had originally become aware of the issue on 12 January and this week identified 26 vulnerable models.

The company said it will have the revised firmware available this week, and estimated that “fewer than one thousand units” could be open. Globally Trendnet said the number was “most likely less than 50,000″. However, apparently only five per cent of Trendnet’s customers have registered their devices, which might make emailing the others difficult.

The vulnerability was first publicised on 10 January when a blog author discovered that after setting up one of the cameras with a password its video stream became accessible to anyone who typed in the correct internet address.

Webcam hacking is a term and practice you may not have heard of, but will never forget after watching the movie below. The movie is simply titled “Webcam“, and was shot completely on none other than an actual webcam.

The movie is well written, directed, and the main character is grounded well, with solid acting from the actress.

What really sets the movie apart is that it’s based on a true story, and webcam hacking is a practice with thousands of documented cases, according to the short film.

People heading for the Kootenay Lake ferry terminal at Kootenay Bay can get a look at just how long the wait will be thanks to a new webcam, reports Megan Cole for the Nelson Star.

The East Shore Internet Society set up the webcam as a service to the community, says Bob Carter, operations manager for the society.

“It’s been very popular. People think it’s the best thing we’ve ever done. It is really handy and I’ve used it many times myself, especially when the little ferry was running, I would sit there and wonder do I go for the ferry and think ‘not yet, not yet. Ok now!’” he said. The webcam can be seen HERE.

Adobe engineers on Thursday fixed a vulnerability in its Flash software that could enable attackers to use a person’s computer webcam or microphone feeds for spying on the person. Adobe made changes to an Adobe website page that controls Flash user’s security settings. The fix did not require users to do anything more than stop shaking. A few days before the Adobe fix, Feross Aboukhadijeh, a Stanford University computer science student, had gone public with his announcement of the Adobe flaw: Update Flash

With Halloween just around the corner, a Taunton Street homeowner caught some ghostly images on his webcam last weekend. Scarier still, the images were of a burglar rifling through the home and making off with valuables.

Plainville police have posted the images on the department’s Facebook page and this might shake up the burglar: Police say they’ve already received several potential leads in the case.

Spectral as the images might be some say the guy in the pictures actually looks more like a zombie, one costumed in stereotypical burglar’s attire at that the man’s face is clearly visible. “There’ve been a lot of people calling in about potential suspects,” Patrolman William Lamb said Wednesday night. “We have a lot of leads that probably will be followed up during the day shift with detectives.”

Police say the homeowner, whose name and exact address were not released, had the webcam running inside the house when the intruder broke in around 6 p.m. Sunday through an unlocked door. No one was home at the time of the incident, but the homeowner’s wife returned about five minutes later.

The thief made off with a jar of change that belonged to the wife and hundreds of dollars in quarters the couple had given their young children as gifts on special occasions, police said.

Lamb said the homeowners might have left the webcam on accidentally. “I don’t think they knew they had it on at first,” he said. Investigators describe the suspect as a white man in his 20s or 30s, weighing about 140 pounds, but that’s pretty clear from the images police are distributing. Need a webcam ?
