Black Bear Cub Born On Webcam Is Missing

A little black bear cub that was born while people watched via webcam in northern Minnesota in January is now missing. The biologists who run the North American Bear Center said on its web site Monday night that it had been nearly three days since they had seen “Hope” and her mother “Lily” together. Lynn Rogers and Sue Mansfield also wrote that they feared the cub had died and the chances of finding her were dwindling.

“We spent today looking expectantly up trees and scanning the forest floor for a dark shape. Nothing.” They wrote. “We started at the red pine and circled outward. A hundred yards away is a well traveled dirt road—the road where Sue parked that first night when she couldn’t sleep and drove to the spot to listen for any cry. Across that road is where Sue heard rustling and claws on bark that night.”

In a letter posted online Rogers and Mansfield also noted that “Lily” appeared to be giving up the search for the cub, which might be a sign that recent heavy rains may have washed away any scent needed to track “Hope.” Or it might mean something more disappointing. It’s not unusual for cubs to go missing and never be found. And while the biologists hope for good news they also note that it’s possible that Lily will mate again and produce another young bear. “The emotional rollercoaster continues,” they wrote. “Although we haven’t completely given up hope, mainly want closure.”
